Swan Dive

Swan Dive was a difficult piece for me to compose. Crisp sturdy lines and images come more easily to me than unruly scribbles and placement. But I have been admiring abstracts of this nature for some time now and wanted to try my hand. The swan came out of a random magazine gotten for free from our local library. After I painted most every part of this piece I knew the swan was needed to make it complete. I also used pencil, a sharpie marker and a chopstick in this composition which is a first for me, but I like the idea of using whatever you have available in your art. I felt like I really had to let go of something to make this happen but I'm glad I did because I''m really happy with the way it worked out.

This piece took about 6 days to complete including drying time. I had to wait for the paint to dry completely so I could peel the swan's wing off and reglue it down because it had rippled the first time.
I listened to Justin Cronin's The Passage while I composed This image. The passage was sort of like an end of the world zombie tale but with viral's instead of zombies. I being a huge fan of zombie reading material loved every minute of The Passage and would highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan as well!

  1. Very nice piece! I know what you mean about being used to using crisp sturdy lines instead of unruly scribbles. I was really precise, detailed, and meticulous with my artwork a while ago. An art professor taught me that it was ok to just relax and use a more painterly approach sometimes. Not so tight, but loose and free. I had fun painting and drawing that way :)
